Eamo
Just stumbled here from Digg.
I’m not sure if this was the actual intention, given the “legibility” of the street tag, but it looks like it says “Eamo”, which (here in Ireland) is short for Eamon (my name), an Irish name, often translated to English as Edmund or sometimes Edward.
If that is in fact the case, then subtlety is clearly your strong point, Mr. Artist.

Hmmm… if you like this comic, you should see The Wackness which came out in theaters two weeks ago. Great indie movie, and this comic basically stole it’s joke/premise from the movie. Nearly verbatim, too. 😦
M
PHIL’S REPLY: I’ll have to stop you right there Mr. Ocean.
Firstly, I haven’t seen this movie you speak of, so before you go accusing people of stealing ideas, maybe ponder the concept that it is possible for two people to have the same idea independently of each other.
Secondly, I could even email you EXACTLY my train of thought as to how this idea came about if that will make you stop you tossing about accusations of plagiarism.
And thirdly, your Dad’s music sucks! Especially “Carribean Queen”.

Rock Chalk:
I’m no copyeditor, but, strictly speaking, and in the context of this cartoon, I think you’re correct.
Under different circumstances this use could be fine. In prose, if a preceeding question requires a one word answer, then such use would certainly be appropriate.
For example:
“Who killed Rebecca?” he asked.
“Edward.”
It’s not unusual to have a single word sentence containing a noun (or a pronoun, or a verb, or an adverb, etc.). It’s all about what comes before and after and what impact the writer desires that one word to have on the reader. (Note: Microsoft Word, the reigning champion of grammar nazis, is notorious for labeling perfectly acceptable sentences as fragments.)
Anyway, that’s my take on it. Language, even in its written form, is fluid, and the rules governing it can be bent (and even broken) in the service of expressing ideas. And the idea in this cartoon is brilliant and hysterical.
Geek out.
PHIL: And do you know why Edward killed Rebecca?
(Ahem)
Because the bitch be serving his Earl Grey COLD, dawg!

Edward’s being consciously archaic. If you look at signage from the 19th century, it was considered correct to put a period at the end of words on signs: “LIVERY STABLE.” “TANNERY.” “BAKERY.”
So he is right as rain, in addition to being a badass.

I really dont understand the supposed humor of this cartoon….
How is this funny?
Is there suppose to be subtle humor in here somewhere or is the whole joke based upon the fact that someone tagged a wall in proper english….cuz thats not really funny if you understand various types of communication. (notice how i used the l33t txt speech of ‘cuz’)

Um. No. Wrong.
What about one-word imperatives, interjections, and yes and no? If you think periods after lone words are incorrect, I guess you’d have a hard time having a social life without “Hi.” or “Hey.” Don’t think about answering any questions, either. My condolences.

October 18, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Mr Octopus,
But what if he were writing his name in answer to the unspoken question:
“Who slept with your mother?”
“Edward.”
It’s one word, but it requires a full stop. I’m no grammar expert like yourself, but I would go so far as to say that it is still a sentence… just a short one.
Alternatively… whatevs.

Edward Hamlin
Given that I am a writer and grammar snob named Edward, this is particularly apt. I have more hair than your Edward, but we are clearly kindred spirits.
I will say, it’s the first time I’ve ever ordered a tee shirt with THAT degree of foul language on it. To be used in limited circumstances, but enjoyed all the same. Excellent cartoon!

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any techniques to help stop content from being stolen? I’d certainly appreciate it.|

Most people are not aware that fast hair growth amino scalp therapy shampoos (obviously with no sulfates, no parabens and no DEA) are a thing. Folks now may attain longer hair and possess more options. Surely worth checking out.
When you’re addressing hair loss, damaged hair, avoiding scalp disorders, fast hair growth, hair and scalp health more often than not, very similar thoughts become relevant.
For the most part, you should try to stay away from hair treatments and products that contain chemicals like parabens, DEA and sulfates.
What’s good for your hair is good for your skin also.
Clearly your content above hits the nail in the head for multiple reasons. It steers away from the accustomed pitfalls and pitfalls most fall into: purchasing bad alternatives. Keep it up!
