There was a school shooting at Dawson College in Montreal last fall where one student was killed and nineteen were injured. The lunatic then killed himself after being shot in the arm by a cop. The crazy person used a ‘Beretta CX4 Storm’, a sci-fi looking 9mm semi-auto carbine. A year before the shooting there were only nine of them registered in Canada. A month after the shooting there were 46 new registrations. The shooting actually served as a commercial for the CX4.

Funny… I was just thinking that the chairman of Glock must have had a secret smile to himself over all the free publicity.
I think it’s ridiculous that the BRAND of the gun is disclosed. It should just be referred to as a “handgun”. But then brands are such a huge part of the public consciousness nowadays that I suppose it’s not so surprising.

Thanks. 🙂
Yeah, I put that note in ‘coz I thought some people wouldn’t be able to comprehend the idea of a cartoon about Virginia Tech, so I just wanted to make it abundandtly clear I wasn’t having a laugh at anyone’s expense. Might have been unnecessary though!

Homer: Now, I believe you have some sort of firearm for me.
Gun Shop Owner: Well, let’s see here. According to your background check, you’ve been in a mental institution…
Homer: Yeah.
Gun Shop Owner: …frequent problems with alcohol…
Homer: [laughs nervously] Yeah.
Gun Shop Owner: …beat up President Bush!
Homer: Former President Bush.
[The owner slaps a red rubber stamper on Homer’s printout.]
Homer: “Potentially dangerous”?!
Gun Shop Owner: Relax, that just limits you to three handguns or less.
Homer: Woo hoo!

I don’t know what its like in other countries, but in America our access to guns is provided to us by bill of rights. Its there so that should we ever need to, we as citizens can overthrow a despotic tyrannical government, and purchasing this ability through an armed population means does result in some tragedy but any freedom will result in more choas. thats the very nature of freedom.
More practicly I would say that you don’t credit a hammer with building a house(or an inanimate carbon rod with saving a shuttle flight?), why do you do blame a gun for commiting a crime? the sicko’s that use guns or knives or brickes or orders to cuase pain and suffering are to blame, giving any credit to their implaments only removes guilt from where it rightly belongs: with the crimminals.

Dave, you make some fair points. I guess I was having more of a dig at the people making money out of guns as opposed to gun owners.

The second amendment called for a militia, not an armed population. But that’s not the point… the idea the people of Australia, Canada, America, France or Britain or any other democratic government need to be armed to guarantee the government maintains said democracy is just paranoid, and the only democracy where the majority believe this to be true is America.
If having a huge portion of the population armed is meant to protect the democracy from falling, which parts of the armed population get to determine when said democracy is failing?

the second ammendment to the bill of rights states that a “well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” in every single other instance “the people” means the citizenry, as in every single American citizen. seems a little odd that in just this one place they would use it in the way Garbiel intones…
other countries not having rights to property (including firearms) like we do in America doesn’t really faze me. what works for them works for them, but calling a fear of eventual tyranny paranoid requires an awful lot of hopeful optimism on your part. But if you consider it paranoid, thats fine, you don’t have to own guns or any other piece of private property that makes you uneasy, butt plugs make me uneasy and I don’t own any, but using law to keep me from owning inanimate objects that make you uneasy is just as wrong as a law banning butt lugs (I’m aware some laws probubly exist to that effect somewhere)
“When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” Thomas Jefforson said that, now I don’t know about you, but believing that I want my government to be absoultly terrified of me and all my fellow citizens.

that would all depend on the particulars of the hypothetical revolution your talking about, an attempt at predicting something with so many hypotheticals is fairly pointless.
If I had to hazard a guess I would say that for any revolution to occur it would have to be painfully clear to the majority of the people that the goverment had lost control of itself and needed to be forcefully replaced with something better. like widespread confiscation of private property for the supposed common good perhaps…

My only comment would be that guns and butt plugs don’t really compare. Guns are quite obviously more lethal.
That said, if I were to be confronted by a thug in a dark alley weilding a butt plug, I think I would be more scared than if he had a gun.

harish42 have you ever filled out the from to buy a gun??? if you have you would realize that what you said was very stupid!!!! if you have been comitted to a mental
institution you can not legally buy a gun. (any gun: pistol riffle or shotgun).
another thought that i would like to say is; if a every could carry a concealed gun on their person at all times it would stupid to try to mug them, because you would not know who does or doesnt have a gun. also it would be stupid to try to take a gun somewere to start shooting people because some one would pull out their gun a nd shoot back.

you can have my gun when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers!
